Today we’re going to talk about rifle fit. If your rifle isn’t fitted to you, then you’re not going to use it to its full potential. And we’re going to talk about the points that make a rifle fit a person. These are the butt, that could be adjustable side to side and in movement up and down. The cheek piece, to give you correct cheek weld and correct eye relief. If these aren’t correct then you’re not going to get the full potential out of the weapon.

Firstly, lets talk about eye relief. Where your cheek ends up in relationship to the scope is how you get a clear picture through the scope. So you must have the correct eye relief for the scope that you’re using. Every different scope has a slightly different eye relief. You must set yours up to make sure it’s correct and that you see the whole circle in the scope. No shading, no shadowing.

The cheek piece is probably the number one problem out there today. People don’t have the correct cheek weld. When you’re working on your cheek weld, the cheek bone of your face must be against the cheek piece so that when you open your eyes you’re looking through the scope. And we’ll show you how to do that in a second.

Technically the gun should be long enough for you. If you’re really big, then you’re going to have a really long gun. If you’re really small, you’re going to have a really small gun. This gun is setup for me. One of the ways we test it is you measure from the crook of your arm out to the tip of your finger. And I’ve got about 16 inches. Take about an inch off that for your trigger pull and run the tape across the gun to give it out. I’ve got exactly 15 and a quarter. That makes the weapon fit me from my shoulder to the scope.

Then we come to actual butt piece itself. This one is fully adjustable and we put it on there and adjust it. We’ll move it up and down and left and right. The idea of this is so that when you set the gun up, you can set it up so it fits directly in the shoulder joint of your arm.

Then we go to the cheek piece. If this is fitted correctly you’ll see through the scope when you get your normal cheek weld. When you get on the gun, to get the correct cheek weld, you don’t bring your face down on the gun, you bring it up until the cheek piece is up against your cheek bone. And once I’m here, I can see through the scope and I can see that the gun fits.

We can now load and make ready. One of the little drills we’ll do to check that everything’s fine, is we close our eyes, get on the gun, open our eyes, and I’m looking straight through the scope at the target. We’re now good to shoot.
