Scope Settings

Davison2-1

Now we’re ready to zero our gun. We’ve got our gun out on the range and the first thing we need to do is to make sure that the scope and the scope mounts are all tight.

Davison2-4

Take your Allen key and check that the scope is in place and that all the rings are nice and tight. Then we need to actually make sure that the scope is setup for you. We’ll turn the focal lens here until the crosshairs are crystal clear.  And then we’ll turn the parallax until the target is crystal clear. Then basically set the gun up and now we’re ready to shoot.

Davison2-5

Remember, the definition of a group is three or more rounds fired at the same point of aim from the same position and hold.  That’s a good group at 100 yards. Lets go measure where it is on the target.

Davison2-6

Davison2-7

As we can see, the group we just fired is about two inches to the left and an inch-and-a-half low of center. We now need to put that measurement into the scope so that we can bring it to the point of aim, point of impact. To get good groups like this you may have to try 2 or 3 different types of match grade ammunition.  You’ll see what your gun likes.

OK, so now we can dial it into your scope. You need to know what the increments are on your scope. Your scope will be in MOA’s or in mils.  I know on this scope I need to come up on the elevation 4 increments, and go right 5.  And as we put the alteration in you can see that the crosshairs move roughly to where the group was. Now we’re ready to shoot again.

O.K. so we’re happy with that alteration that we put in, so now we need to sync the dials so we’re zero  for zero. All we need to do is loosen them up, turn them around to zero, and tighten them up again. Now the gun and the scope and the dials are all set at 100 yards.  We can go to any range and shoot.
