Shooting Moving Targets

Davison6-102

There’s two ways of shooting a moving target.  Both of them need the use of a good reticle like a mil-dot or mil-line.  The two ways are to trap the target by waiting for it, or to track it by moving your reticle in front of it in the correct spacing.   We’re going to try and show you both today.

Davison6-2

First of all, we’re going to look at tracking. As you can see the target’s out.  I’m on my scope and I’m tracking at the same speed as the target, at the correct distance from the target on the mil-dot reticule.  I try and keep smooth and move at the same speed, so I can get as many rounds off as possible.

Now let’s trap the target. The gun stays still and I’m waiting for the target to come into my reticle.  When it’s in the correct the path of the reticle I squeeze the trigger and the gun goes off.  O.K.  So we’ve practiced on both methods.

Davison6-4

We’ve checked our data and we know that with this .308 rifle we need to have a one mil lead on this target as it runs across the range at 100 yards. So let’s try and shoot it live.

First we’ll shoot the target using tracking. Remember while you’re tracking you must keep the correct spacing on your reticule.  Move the reticule at the same speed as the target and be as smooth as possible with your bolt. If you start jerking the bolt around you’re going to move around and you won’t hit the target.

Now lets trap the target.  To trap the target all you have to do is hold the reticule in front of the target where the target’s going to move into it.  As the target comes to the right place on the reticule, squeeze the trigger and let the gun go off.  You may trap the target 2 or 3 times as it runs along. But remember you’re trapping not tracking.

Now you’ve learned to track and trap.  Make sure you practice both because the conditions out there and the distance to the target will dictate which one you need to use. Stay Safe.
