PRO TIPS with TODD JARRETT - LESSON 3 The Draw Today we are going to talk about the draw and the reload. A couple things you need to learn and understand about safety when drawing out of a holster, the most important part is not to sweep the tips of your fingers when you draw the gun.  Ninety-five percent of the people who are not experienced by drawing out of a holster will have a tendency to capture the gun at the very end of the extension of the draw.  You will find by doing that most people will have a tendency to sweep those fingers, so be careful of that.       The technique I am going to teach you will be faster and safer. What we will do is bring our support hand in to our body, keep it there so when we draw the gun you will notice that the muzzle will clear the tips of the fingers. For competitive reasons you will see now that the grip is established earlier. As you drive to the target we can now, if needed, make a correction as we go to the target.   Guys, now you can see I have switched from my belt holster to a thigh holster. This is Blackhawk’s new Serpa Tactical Y-holster system and you will notice that I have also switched to a set of gloves. If you wear a set of gloves for work make sure that you practice with them all the time.   Now, on the draw out of a thigh holster, you want to make sure that when you go down to it to bring it up the same way as if you were coming off of the belt and drive the gun to the target. You will find if you take the gun and mount the gun level as you are going to the target, you will have a faster first shot and safety will always be our primary concern. Now lets talk about mag changes. The action shooters have been putting mag wells on their guns for over twenty years for a smoother transition into the gun. Notice I have a stock gun here along with one with a mag well.  By using a mag well it will truly reduce the stress you might have competing on the range.  First we are going to talk about loading with a stock gun. The key thing about mag changes is make sure you keep the gun up in your face so you can watch the bottom of the mag opening. As you start the change, make sure to keep the gun close to your face. You will have more support and more strength to push the magazine in versus holding it out far away from the body. Remember watch the gun, do not watch the target. OK, now we just put away our stock gun and now we are going to load up and get our mag well gun working.  Of course there are all types of tactical reloads that we may have for law enforcement and military and for you IDPA shooters.
