PRO TIPS with TODD JARRETT

Sighting Distance

09TTodd2-1

Today’s Pro Tip is understanding what a sight picture should look like at any given distance, three yards all the way up to 25 yards. I want to talk about the importance of understanding what type of weapon you are going to be using whether you are in competition, concealed carry, maybe for law enforcement. The longer the sight radius, the more accurate we are going to be.

Now lets talk about real quick shooting at a target three yards away. How much sight picture is actually needed at that distance? Okay, I was shooting that target there in my peripheral vision while I was looking at the camera. At three yards away, how much sight picture do you really need? I was actually looking through the whole gun, the gun was actually my sight picture.

When I go to a seven yard target, there is the boundary line where you have to transition where the sights start to come into play. How much do you need? Maybe about 30 percent of your sight picture at seven, so lets move to the seven yard line and concentrate on that.

Okay, you notice the difference in my cadence at the three yard line, and then I went to the seven yard line. You’ll notice a different cadence there. I followed through longer in order to make a good shot on the target, but also I need to start incorporating a good grip, a good stance, and more balance. So the further I go away, the more important that becomes.

Now lets take a look at going from a seven yard target on out to a 15 and 25 yard shot. Here is my sight picture at the seven yard line. Here are my sights at 15 yards, and here are my sights at 25 yards. Now you can understand what a front sight should look like at 25 yards away.

A little tip for my competition buddies who are always asking, “Todd should I shoot from near to far or from far to near?” Well whenever possible, I am always going to bust that front target first.

Think about concealed carry. It’s a shorter sight radius on your gun than your competition gun. Now it becomes more important to be able to see a sight picture because of the shorter sight radius.

Let me do a little demonstration for you of this with a pocket gun. Okay, we can see how difficult it is to master a short sight radius gun, like a concealed carry gun.

If you don’t go on the range and practice, you are never going to get any better. My friends in law enforcement and my three gun buddies, get your rifles out. You can apply these same techniques on the range that we just did. So, good luck and safe shooting.
