PRO TIPS with IRLENE MANDRELL

Choosing a Shotgun

Today, I’d like to talk with you about the different styles of guns. This is a breakaway gun. A breakaway gun is any gun that has a hinged opening where the chamber meets the receiver, and you can tell this is a double barrel. And it is an over-and-under, which you can tell from looking at the barrels. I think that double barrel shotguns have a lot of advantages in certain ways.

One, is you have these chokes. There’s one trigger, and you’re going to know which barrel is shooting first, whether it’s already preset or you set it. And you’ll know your target, so you can just use the chokes accordingly and that’s a big plus. But I think it is a beautiful gun, and a lot of people do love it because of the tradition. A couple of barrels make it a little bit heavier. I didn’t really feel that much recoil, some people do, but I think it is a great gun.

Now, this is a traditional side-by-side and I’d like to show you how this shoots. Pull.

I like that gun. As I was telling you before, this is a side-by-side. And you know, a lot of people, actually get a little afraid to shoot this because the barrels looks so wide. They’re not used to the barrels being side-by-side, but you are still looking down the rib, and you are still focusing on the target. So it’s a great gun, and it really doesn’t make that big a difference in that way.

The third gun I want to share with you today is one of my personal favorites, really. It’s a Smith & Wesson semi-auto. Let’s fire it a little bit. Pull.

I love this gun. I love shooting a semi-auto. The one thing about the semi-auto is that it is gas operated, so there’s not a lot of recoil. But you do have to keep it clean so the ammo will feed. The other thing I like about it, is it is very easy to load. I shoot a lot of flurries, so it’s fast, fast to load, and if you only want to load one when you have a chance, you can sneak it in there. So I recommend this a lot, but all the guns have their special features.

Also, we have different gauges. The semi-auto is a 12 gauge and the over-and-under is a 12 gauge. I don’t know if you noticed, the side-by-side is a 20 gauge. And it is smaller and that’s one thing I wanted to have it out here to mention to women. Not only is it lighter, because it is a smaller gun, but also it really fits. The butt of the gun just seems to fit in a small frame, here, for women or for children. When you get a chance, go to your gun range and try the different styles of guns. See what works for you on the range before you make your choice.
