Case Preparation

AllanCasePrep1-3

Today’s reloading tip is going to be about cleaning cases and the importance of identifying any safety hazards in the cases before we get into the full loading process. I’ve gone ahead and laid out a few examples here so that we can take a look at them.

Here in this example, you can see a tear beginning around the circumference of the neck.

In this next example you can actually see a tear in the shoulder of the case.

And here you can see a severe case of case-head separation.

And in the final example you actually can see a severe ding in the case mouth.

All four of these cases are good examples of unsafe conditions that must be identified and removed before continuing with the reloading process.  In addition, having good clean cases is important so that you can extend the case life and the life of your reloading dies; therefore starting out with good clean cases is the first critical step to improving accuracy and to ensuring the safety of your hand loads.
