3 Guns on One Stage
Basic Principles
What you just saw was a typical USPSA multi-gun stage. Shooting a USPSA multi-gun stage can be very complicated. There are a few basic principles that we need to follow to get you the best score.
- First off is ammo management
- Next, we need to hit every target to prevent an extra reload during the course of fire.
- And lastly, there are a few tips we can do to improve your time.

Let’s break this down into the individual guns, we’ll start with the shotgun.
The first section that I have on this shotgun course is 6 targets. I am going to shoot them from right to left so that I’m flowing with the course of fire. I am going to take 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and immediately start moving. As I move down the course of fire I’ve got two more poppers, 1, 2 and I am going to go ahead and hit my reload that I’ve planned, shoot the last popper then these three clay targets all on the move. Rack that one last round out that I have on there and set down the gun.

Transitioning to the pistol, I want to be sure that I touch my thumb right in the edge of the grip safety here, that brings me to the proper grip...

Then rack the slide and shoot these targets from left to right, ending on the easiest target so that I have a quick shot. Then I’ll drop the magazine, rack the slide and set the pistol down.

At this point I’ll grab the rifle, rack the action and go to Prone. And I’m going to drag the bi-pod across the rifle targets.
At this point let’s put all of these tips together and run through it at full speed.

As you noticed I took an extra shot with a shotgun because I missed one of my targets. The number one rule of multi-gun, never run out of ammunition. On the shotgun I’ve got an extra shell on the gun itself. For the pistol I’ve got an extra magazine and for the rifle I’ve got one extra magazine on the gun also.
And I guess I am going to go and do some practicing. I’ll see you on the range.
