Sighting In on The Guns of Steel Shooting
First Mike Irvine profiles the highly modified guns shot by the top competitors at the US National Steel Championships.
Most are highly modified designs based on the classic 1911. But most have been lightened to increase cycle time between shots. Hundredths of a second do make a difference in the winning times for the top champions.
And the rimfire guns are also modified, with replacement barrels, lightened slides and new choices of springs.
Whether shooting in the Limited, Open or Rimfire Divisions, modified “Race gun” preparation is very much a part of the winning choices by each competitor.
Our Guys Shoot Steel

Greg, Mike and John are on a mission this season – trying their skill with different shooting sports.

It makes for lively discussion, both before and after their shooting time on the range. We take bragging rights very seriously here.

This time they’re facing the classic target stages at the US National Steel Championships to find out what a new shooter can do in the game. We’ll tell you now, there are no records being set.
The Bump Buster
Ken Rucker of Texas invented the Bump Buster and installs it in your shotgun or rifle stock. The Bump Buster is a spring and hydraulic supported replacement that mounts by replacing the last two inches of your stock. You end up with less recoil for your shotgun or your big game hunting rifle.
Ken will install the Basic Bump Buster for $360. The Deluxe, with adjustable butt plate, is $425

The Adams Arms “AR-Fix”

John’s got all his AR Rifle Tools out on the bench to install the Adams Arms gas piston conversion on an AR. It’s not a difficult install that cleans up the AR innards and decreases cycle time.

The AR Fix Kit is $499
