History’s Guns - the M-1 Carbine 

It was supposed to be the handy rifle for cooks and supply clerks, chambered in a pistol cartridge. But the M-1 Carbine became much more than a rear-guard light weight. It evolved to select fire, and a folding stock, and went right to the front lines as an effective alternative to the big Garand. The six million Carbines that went to war were all produced between 1941 and 1945.
