End of Trail – The Silver Anniversary

26-04-1Twenty-five years after the start of the most successful shooting sport in our history, there is no denying the appeal of putting on an over-sized hat and shooting the guns of the Old West. This is the Silver Anniversary of End of Trail, the biggest annual gathering of SASS members and the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting.  And the big event keeps getting bigger at Founders Ranch in New Mexico.  This time there are more than 1,000 registered members shooting and living the role of their cowboy alias.

26-04-2Worldwide SASS membership has passed 77,000, making the Single Action Shooting Society the largest group of shooting enthusiasts anywhere.   For the majority of SASS members, shooting the old guns and living the role or your cowboy hero is the appeal. But at the highest levels of the sport, the champion shooters are amazing to watch as they compete for the National Titles.  SASS has created a wide variety of categories for different types of shooting, from authentic history, to the Hollywood version of the Old West.

26-04-3There’s the Modern category for 6 guns with adjustable sights. There’s the Traditional category for six-guns with sights from the original peace maker design.  Both categories shoot with both hands.  The Gun-Fighter category is for two-handed shooting with two guns in action.  And there are numerous other categories, one for just about every version of the Old West. There are age classifications too. Elder Statesmen for shooters older than 70.  Down to Buckaroos, kids who are younger than 13.

26-04-5If you’re starting to think that Cowboy Action Shooting may have more appeal for your weekends than another round of golf, then start thinking up your alias and sign-up to get your membership badge to join the fun at one of hundreds of local SASS clubs across the country.  Maybe you’ll be at Founders’ Ranch next year, shooting for a personal best at End of Trail.  We’ll see you there.
