 The Sportsman’s Team Challenge  26-06

The Sportsman’s Team Challenge

26-06-1The Sportsman’s Team Challenge has been adding competitors year after year. There are now regional events as well as the national championship. The increase in shooters seems to be coming from the fun they say they are having shooting everything in their arsenal. But the fun does come with a challenge to all your shooting skills with pistol, rifle, and shotgun. And you also have to have a team of shooting buddies and a strategy to win. For 3 days more than 60 teams shoot it out at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. And team is the key to this competition. You’ll need a pair of shooting partners to compete here.

There are three reactive steel target events, three stages combining rifle and pistol shooting under tight time limits.

At the rifle event teams in the open class have 90 seconds to hit targets up to 90 yards away.

The pistol event is a relay race. Each team member shoots, then tags-up, so the next shooter can sprint to the line. The first shooter uses a .22 pistol. The second team member shoots steel targets with a centerfire semi-auto. The third shooter fires .22 rounds at 4 inch squares that fall with a hit.

Then there’s the combo event, with all three team members shooting at the same time. Two competitors shoot .22 pistols, the third member shoots a .22 rifle.

26-06-2The three Shotgun Stages are all claybird shooting:

Teams start with the Flurry.  Five clays come at you all at once. Then the birds keep coming at the rate of one every second. Teams plan to have one member shooting, while the others reload.

Next is the Flush. Like the flurry, five clays come at once, but with two machines throwing from each side and a teal popping up in the center. On this stage each team member covers a specific area of the sky.

The 3rd shotgun event is the Mixed Bag. Team members take turns shooting pairs, but there are 8 random combinations of pairs with no warning where they’re coming from next.

The Sportsman’s Team Challenge is challenge for all your shooting skills with the competitors insisting it is the most fun they’ve yet had in the shooting sports.
