NRA High Power Silhouette 26-09

NRA High Power Silhouette

26-09-1There is thunder on the hill at the Ridgway Rifle Club in Pennsylvania, where over 140 of the best off-hand rifle shooters have gathered for the NRA High Power Silhouette Nationals.

The shooters test their skill in what may be the most difficult shooting discipline out there. The targets are steel cutouts, standing on railroad track. Five targets to a relay of fire. The target ranges are staggering — with the Rams set at 500 meters.

26-09-2The competitors alternate shooting and spotting for each other. The spotter keeps track of the time, 2 ½ minutes per five shot relay. The Spotters watch for and confirm the placement of hits. They read the wind by watching the mirage and give the shooter corrections to compensate. But it’s when the hits aren’t there that the spotter really has work to do, helping the shooter make the adjustments to get on target.

26-09-3The majority of the rifles on the firing line are chambered in .260 Remington. Then comes 7mm-08 and 7mm-BR, which was originally a Bench Rest round. And there is a fair representation of 30 caliber shooters using the .308 chambering. The rule is send enough bullet weight, fast enough, to take the rams down at 500 meters, because it only scores if it falls in three days of competition.

In a training environment, the instructor can record video of what the shooter is doing with his riflescope. In combat, the Castfire Camera can provide real-time intelligence reporting to remote locations when it’s hooked into a satellite link.

This is mil-spec quality with a price to match: $3,500 for the camera and power supply.
