Shooting USA Profile – The Smith & Wesson Engravers
Most shooters and gun owners have an appreciation for the traditions of the past.
That may be the best explanation of why the tradition of engraving of firearms is enjoying a renewed interest and demand among shooters and collectors.
The demand is keeping the Smith & Wesson factory engravers very busy with orders for hand engraving that will keep them working for the next two years.
Plus, limited edition, machine engraved commemoratives are being snapped up in the market as quickly as they are released for sale.
Engraving Manager, Tony Miele thinks customers view their order as an investment in a family heirloom:
Tony says, “I think what they’re doing is looking at it as an investment. I mean you can invest a little bit of money into a gun now, which is just going to rise in value. You have an opportunity to do an heirloom for your family. You can put a picture of your son on it. We’ve put pictures of dogs and cats on guns. There’s a wide variety of things we can do.”

Boy Scout Shooting Camp-O-Ree
The shooting sports have long been a tradition in the Boy Scouts. For decades merit badges have been awarded for trap shooting, rifle shooting, and archery. But long waiting lists during summer camps have kept a lot of Scouts off the range. Until Scout Leaders, like Joe Natcher, formed the Shooting Camp-O-Ree.
Joe says, “There was really nothing for any of the Scout Troops around here to do, other than when they come to summer camp, to learn how to shoot. And a lot of times you would have waiting lists, sometimes two years, before some of the boys that wanted to shoot could learn to shoot. So we wanted to start up something separate where the boys could learn more of how to shoot and do more of it.
Joe Natcher is with the Tennessee Boy Scout Council, but there are more Shooting Camp-O-Ree events being organized across the country. Contact your local Boy Scout Council to find out if safe shooting is being taught to Scouts in your area with support provided by the Friends of the NRA local committees.
