USPSA Open and Production Nationals
The United States Practical Shooting Association has created shooting divisions for each type of handgun, so the top racers shooting their Open Division guns compete on their own level.
While the Production Division shooters, with their off-the-shelf factory guns, compete fairly at their level of the sport.
There are National Championships for each division and the corporate bragging rights that go with a National Title have added to the pressure to win. Just like in auto racing, it’s win on Sunday, sell guns on Monday.
We are in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the new United States Shooting Academy ranges, to crown two national champions.
It’s a bit of an odd pairing of guns in competition, with the Open division allowed just about any modification imaginable, red dot optics, compensators, extra high capacity magazines, you name it. And the Production Division, with no external modifications allowed and capacity restricted to ten rounds in each magazine. With both divisions shooting the same courses of fire, the respective advantages and disadvantages will be apparent.

The CZ-75 SP-01
It’s the newest addition to the CZ-75 line of double-single action handguns. The CZ Design has always been interesting for the reversed slide to frame channels, that have the smaller slide running higher on the gun frame which allows the strong hand grip to be closer to the line of the bore. That reduces muzzle flip.
This is an all steel gun that weighs 2-point-6 pounds…
The CZ controls are slightly different, but there are ambidextrous thumb safeties as well as a safety stop on the hammer and a firing pin safety making this a terrific duty weapon.
The full length dust cover has a picitinny style rail that can be used for a weapon light or laser or, if you anticipate some close quarters confrontation, install the strike plate, and now you have a non-lethal persuasion device and protection from knocking the slide out of battery in a close firing confrontation.
The CZ seventy five SP-01 is from the Czech Republic and sells for just over $600.
