Shooting USA - Fort Benning Three Gun Challenge
This time civilians are playing Army as the Army Marksmanship Unit hosts the closest thing to combat training as competition. It’s the Ft. Benning Three Gun Challenge. The three guns are pistol, rifle, and tactical shotgun.
Anytime the ARMY invites civilians to compete in a shooting competition it is likely to be a good show. So when the Army Marksmanship Unit set out to add even more resources to their annual three gun challenge we knew the match would be worth seeing and so did a record number of competitors who signed up for three days of simulated combat on the Fort Benning ranges.
This year, the match is bigger and better in every way due largely to the amount of ARMY support in the form of equipment, ranges, and facilities. The assets that the ARMY has available to put on a match makes this the premier three-gun match in the United States.
No other three-gun match is going to have a Bradley fighting vehicle as the starting point for a stage. Only a match with the resources of the US ARMY could put competitors in a Stryker Light Armored Vehicle for transport to a stage of fire. This just doesn’t happen anywhere else.
There are multiple titles awarded in the match, defined by the equipment. Tactical Iron means iron sights on all guns. Tactical Optics allows using a scope only on the rifle and the Open Division allows optics and enhancements on all three guns and the use of speed loaders with the shotgun.
Scoring is Time-Plus, the time in seconds to run a stage of fire, with penalty seconds added for shots outside the center of target mass, or for missed targets.
