Max Michel - Shooting on the Move

USAMU1-1

Shooting on the move is one of the most dynamic skills in all of shooting, and that’s what we’ll be covering in today’s Pro Tip. These skills can be valuable to military, law enforcement, and competitors alike.

First thing I would like to cover is weighing the risks versus rewards of shooting on the move. In other words when is it beneficial to do so. There’s three things to take into consideration here. The first will be the difficulty of the shot, the second will be the distance of the target, and the third will be the condition of the terrain. If you feel that you cannot consistently engage your target on the move with at least an 80% success rate then you may want to consider staying stationary for a more balanced and precise shot. However, if you do feel you can be successful on a consistent basis then go ahead and take advantage of shooting on the move by applying the following techniques.

USAMU1-2

There are 4 key steps to remember while engaging targets on the move that will allow you to be successful.

The first step is keeping your knees bent to act as shock absorbers which will reduce the movement of your muscles.

USAMU1-3

Second is taking small steps, rolling your foot in a heel-to-toe manner, and remaining in contact with the ground at all times. This will also reduce the arc of movement in your sights.

USAMU1-4

Third, our feet will be heading in the direction of travel, and...

USAMU1-5

we’re going to pivot our upper body to be square to the target array.

USAMU1-6

Last but certainly not least, it’s important that we use a strict sight focus anytime we’re engaging targets on the move, even more so than if we were in a static position, due to the movement of the sights.

These four key steps work for moving left to right, right to left, as well as moving forward.

USAMU1-7

Now let’s cover shooting on the move while in retreat. The same techniques will apply as before only this time, for me to remain in constant contact with the ground, I now must walk in a toe-to-heel manner to minimize the movement of my sights.

By applying these techniques you to can be successful in engaging targets on the move. Until next time stay Army Strong.
